art deco wallpaper

Art Deco was first a boom, a totally fashionable style that broke the codes established until then, and then we began to find it a bit old-fashioned and outdated. Today, it is back in fashion, and we find again this cubist and geometric spirit in the decorations of houses and apartments, especially in urban areas. Uninhibited or with a discreet touch, we tell you everything you need so that you too can dare to use Art Deco wallpaper in your home.

What is Art Deco wallpaper?

Art Deco wallpaper is a style of wallpaper that is easily recognized thanks to its strict, geometric and dynamic shapes. It is elegant, simple and chic at the same time. We find in this category of wallpaper trends in dark colors, underlined by gilding and royal patterns or geometric shapes. Nowadays, the new Art Deco also offers some very interesting variations. Thus, new wallpapers in this style can offer floral motifs in brighter colors that will be easier to integrate into a contemporary style. This is one of the main decoration trends for 2022.

The Art Deco style: a few words of history

It was in the 1910s that the Art Deco artistic movement appeared, it was then in vogue, but it would be short-lived. After the First World War, people needed change, innovation and fun. Thus, Art Deco begins to disappear, because we find it too “soft” and not lively enough. We then replace elegance, darkness and opulence with simplicity and comfort.

The geometric rigor, the sober chic and the cubist forms of Art Deco will however have crossed the borders, and we find this style in many constructions throughout the world.

Forgotten for many decades, the Art Deco style is once again inviting itself into our homes and apartments. It goes against the current of minimalism, rounded shapes and natural colors of the Scandinavian style that reigned supreme until then. The trend towards industrial style and its raw materials such as copper opens a door, and there is only one step to go from the latter to the Art Deco style. One of the key elements of this comeback is wallpaper. We particularly appreciate the cubist spirit, the geometric shapes and patterns, the dark and velvety colors that dress the walls in a unique way.

The principles to follow when applying Art Deco wallpaper at home

Wallpaper is undoubtedly one of the easiest Art Deco elements to integrate into your decoration without having to redo everything. We appreciate it, because we can very well add a subtle touch to an existing decoration, as much as making it the main element of its new decoration… The most important thing is to know how to dose according to your desires. Contrary to popular belief that one might have, it is not necessary to live in a castle or in a private mansion to be able to use it, as long as a few principles are respected. We particularly like the fact that there are a large number of different patterns with various styles that will undoubtedly allow you to find shoes that suit you, or wallpaper for your wall.

Use it with adequate dosage

First of all, and especially if you are not familiar with Art Deco wallpaper, it is important to start with small touches. Nothing will prevent you, if you like the result, from then extending the areaon which you stick your Art Deco wallpaper. The patterns and colors of this product often make it an element with a strong character, which is immediately noticed in a room.

Thus, it is recommended to start by dressing a section or two of the walls. If you are really chilly, you can even make only a small piece of wall, the Art Deco wallpaper lends itself perfectly to the wall contours of the bed for example. However, nothing prevents you if you are sure of your shot to cover all the walls of a small room in order to give it a total new look or to give a boost to a room which you find too bland, like a cage staircase a hallway or even a bathroom.

Combine it with sleek furniture

Art Deco wallpaper is, as we have seen previously, a fairly heavy object in pattern and color. It must therefore be associate with refined furniture to avoid overloading the room. It must be simple, but made of beautiful materials if possible avoid plywood or plastic materials, opt instead for wood, solid if possible or metal. The important thing is to highlight your furniture with a few well-chosen accessories and touches that we describe just below.

Accompany with some accessories

To highlight its Art Deco wallpaper, we play on the materials of some decorative objects. Thus, we put on furniture legs, lamps or wall sconces or even the borders of brass or gilded frames. We play with the fabrics of the cushions and the curtains that we choose rather thick and textured and to which we do not hesitate to make a golden border to emphasize the whole. Regarding the materials of our furniture and decorative objects, we play on wood to which we match materials such as iron, velvet, lacquer or enamel.

The final touch to complete this decoration is the mirrors and glassware, which again are underline by a gold or lacquered border.

Don’t neglect the lighting

As you will have understood, dark colors are very common for Art Deco wallpapers. If we don’t want it to give our play a sad effect, we have to counterbalance that. What better way to do this than good lighting that covers the whole room so as not to darken the space even more? Do not hesitate to reinforce your ceiling lighting with a pair of well-placed lamps, which will also make excellent accessories to enhance the Art Deco wallpaper.

Art Deco wallpaper may seem like a daring bet (graphic patterns, rustic style, floral pattern, exotic, brickwork, tropical, baroque, abstract style, geometric pattern, etc.) for wall coverings. However, if we respect the few basic principles that must accompany this style of design wallpaper; we often arrive at very beautiful results that have a lot of character. In a child’s room, as a wall tromped L’Oreal, in your bedroom or even in certain rooms in the house such as kitchens or toilets, this original paper has a unique character.  If you are not sure of yourself, the important thing is to go in small steps on a section of wall for example, because the balance is not always easy to find.
