Back pain

Many people complain of suffering from back pain. Changing a few lifestyle habits could have a considerable positive impact on your state of health. Here are some tips that will help relieve, if not eliminate, your back pain.

Break the cycle of back pain

To treat chronic back pain, your doctor may prescribe an NSAID or an opiate, suggest physical therapy, and even, in rare cases, recommend surgery.

  • More importantly, to correct many posture-related problems, you will need to be an active patient, and change certain lifestyle habits.

Description of the vicious circle of chronic back pain:

  • An injury causes pain that leads to muscle tension, then negative emotions (fear, anxiety, irritation), followed by negative thoughts (worry, pessimism).
  • This “emotional repression” and the restriction of physical activity in turn lead to a loss of muscle strength and flexibility.
  • There comes a time when even the slightest injury can start the cycle again.

Simple solutions to relieve back pain

There are many things you can do to cure back pain and prevent further episodes.

Sitting

  • When seated, keep your spine straight, pressing your back firmly into  the back of the chair.
  • A good back supports the lower back and helps maintain good posture.
  • Lumbar rollers will help keep you upright and the wedge-shaped seat cushions will keep you from slouching.

Lying position

Back pain
  • Orthopedic cervical spine pillows support the natural curvature of the neck and keep the spine aligned.
  • To sleep better, get a mattress that supports the body well or buy a bed board to solidify a mattress that is too soft. When reading in bed, use wedge-shaped bed pillows to elevate your knees and relieve pressure on your back.
  • When you sleep, place the cushions so that your neck is straight.
  • Before going to bed, relax your muscles by taking a warm bath.

Standing position

  • Place your head directly above your shoulders, keep your chin parallel to the floor and your neck straight.
  • And the most important: contract your abdominal muscles.
