Sydney was born in Los Angeles, California, on October 10, 1973, the daughter of actress and director Sidney Poitier and his wife, Joanna Shimkus. Sydney’s paternal grandfather was Bahamian and her paternal grandmother was from Nova Scotia. Her mother is Canadian-born American of Lithuanian descent. Sydney has two brothers: actor Jason Poitier and director Stefan Poitier.
Sydney Tamiia Poitier grew up in Hollywood Hills, where she attended Wildwood School and Windward School. She later studied acting at New York University’s Tisch School of the Arts.
Poitier made her television debut in 1995 with a small role in an episode of the medical drama ER. The following year, she had a supporting role in the short-lived ABC police drama High Incident. She subsequently guest-starred on episodes of Party of Five, NYPD Blue and Just Shoot Me!. In 1999, she appeared in the films Ugly Naked People and Random Hearts.
